Sleep...Ever Elusive

I'm not sure why but every morning this week I've woken up at about 2 AM.  I lie in bed for awhile, shifting positions, trying relaxation & playing other little mind games with myself until I give up and get up.  Jim is sleeping soundly.  He's so fortunate--his head hits the pillow and he's out until morning.

The cat, who sleeps on the bed, scurries out to the kitchen with me.  "Look, Mom.  Ari & I are out of water.  I'm thirsty."

"Okay, Slim.  Here's water for you, Buddy."
I put the coffee on...
and decide to follow the advice I give to my patients--"If you wake up & can't get back to sleep, get out of bed.  Sit in a comfortable chair, read until you're tired and then go back to bed."  Today on Fresh Air, I heard about an article on Edward Snowden in the new issue of Vanity Fair--perfect.  Two other magazines join the stack just in case.
I have a warm fire, my comfy chair & some reading.  You know what--it worked!  I slept in the chair for probably another hour.  Didn't get to the Snowden article but the weekend is ahead.  It's a good thing I hadn't planned to lay my head down at work & get forty winks because I was busy today.  That extra bit of sleep in the chair was helpful.

But boy, I sure am tired tonight.  May sleep tuck you in tonight & wake you up when you choose.  Good night from the end of the road.

  1. I love the long summer days but I don't get near as much sleep as I do in the winter. That sun light coming through the windows at 5:30 gets my attention whether I want it to or not. You have so many exciting things going through your brain that I'm not surprised you aren't sleeping as much. Hope last night was better.

  2. When I awake during the night, I have a bowl of ceral (the only time I eat cereal) then go back to bed with my book and read until I fall asleep. (I use a battery powered reading light). Has work good for me for years.

  3. Moving from east to west I have trouble sleeping past 4 AM. Central time seems to agree with me most and Pacific time with my husband. Hopefully, things will smooth out soon.

  4. I've never had trouble sleeping. Unless I do something dumb, like have a coffee later in the evening than I should.
Drives my wife nuts that I can be asleep within minutes of going to bed.

  5. I have the same problem only mine is at 3am. I don't think I'd ever go back to sleep if I drank coffee at that point. David is like just like Jim or was until the Myeloma. Head hits the pillow, he's asleep. I have even more trouble when they flip the time back and forth an hour.
